Microsoft is re-releasing its Windows 10 October 2018 Update today, using the company pulling it offline as a consequence of data deletion issues over the past weekend. The software giant says stopping only a few reports of data loss, for a price of one one-hundredth one percent. "We have fully investigated all reports expertise loss, identified and stuck all known issues on the update, and conducted internal validation," says Microsoft's John Cable, director of program management for Windows Servicing and Delivery.

Microsoft would finally be re-releasing the Windows 10 October 2018 Update to Windows Insiders, before rolling versus eachother more broadly to consumers. "We will carefully study the results, feedback, and diagnostic data from my Insiders prior to taking additional steps towards re-releasing more broadly," explains Cable.

It's the bug that caused file deletion was relating to Windows 10 users who had enabled Known Folder Redirection to redirect folders like desktop, documents, pictures, and screenshots through the default location. Microsoft introduced code in the latest update to delete the empty and duplicate known folders, however it appears they weren't always empty. Microsoft has continued to evolve fixes to deal with a variety of problems to do with these folder moves, plus these fixes are going to be tested with Windows Insiders.

When it comes to Windows Insiders, Microsoft's testing community did flag some of these issues prior to the release. Microsoft typically acknowledge this when the company is making some changes on the feedback tool for Windows 10 to ensure that testers can flag the degree of bug reports. "We have added a capacity for users also to provide an indication of impact and severity when filing User Initiated Feedback," explains Cable. "We expect this'll allow us to better monitor one of the most impactful issues whether feedback volume is low."

Microsoft can monitor feedback associated with this re-released build of Windows 10 October 2018 Update and will eventually officially launch it to consumers when company is confident "that there isn't an further impact" to Windows 10 users. "We are dedicated in learning from this experience and improving our processes and notification systems that can help ensure our customers possess positive expertise in our update process," says Cable.
